NDRI Karnal clones world's second buffalo calf

Scientists at the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) here in Haryana have successfully cloned a buffalo calf for the second time in the world, officials said Sunday.

The institute had this February cloned the world's first buffalo calf.

The second calf named Garima was born Saturday and the animal is healthy, scientists said.

'The calf was born yesterday (Saturday) through a caesarean operation that went for nearly an hour,' Rameshwar Singh, official spokesperson of the institute, said.

'Last time we took the donor cell from the ear of the mother buffalo but this time we have taken it from the foetus,' he said.

'The newly-born cloned calf is normal and healthy and weighs 43 kg. However, we have kept it in the ICU (intensive care unit) under the continuous supervision of our scientists. This time we do not want to take any chances.'

The first cloned calf died within a few days after suffering from a lung infection.

'This is the world's second cloned buffalo calf and the first one was also cloned here,' Singh said.

The cloning was done on the Murrah breed of buffalo. The breed has been successful in Haryana and other states as a high milk-yielding variety.

Karnal Roasts at 43 Degrees

Roasting Heat:
If Wednesday was bad,Thursday was worse. The mercury rose from a terrible 42.1 degrees Celsius to a cruel 43 degrees Celsius in Karnal.
And there is no end in sight yet to the punishing heat.

The minimum temperature also rose to 26.8 degrees Celsius, up from 26.1 degrees Celsius. Both the maximum and minimum temperatures are hovering at seven degrees above normal.

The sizzling heat left the roads and business places almost empty as people preferred to sit in the comfort of their homes. Coolers and ACs also failed to bring much relief to the people.

Power Cuts:
To add to the discomfort level, the power supply of the region is also not proper. In Karnal city there is a power cut of more then 6-8hrs.
God knows what will happen after the Elections...!!!

Karnal police enrol rat recruits...!

Rodents have lately said to become a huge problem in India’s northern states, which are some of the most productive farming areas on the planet. Apart from invading and consuming food supplies, rodents are also said to be responsible for relocating landmines in the border region, throwing the entire landmine removal operation in chaos.

The situation was particularly bad in the central district of Karnal, where armies of mice have, over the years, destroyed many court records.

"Innumerable rodents have invaded the Moharar Maalkhana [record room] and we have been helpless," said the senior superintendent of Karnal, Arshinder Singh Chawla.
But now, Mr Chawla and his men seem to have found an unlikely solution to their problem in a pair of albino relatives of the pest rodents.

"It is working like magic," he said.

"My men have been releasing them in the Maalkhana every night and the pests have just disappeared.

"And the best part is that our guards don't touch the documents or the poppy husk, we keep them well fed on a diet of fresh milk and roti," said Mr Chawla.

Mr Chawla said he had no clue why or how his pet white rats were doing the job, but it could be that he has discovered a new way of tackling India's rodent problem.

Not an Easy Road(ways) for Karnal…!!!

About a decade ago 190 buses were sanctioned for Karnal depot to provide comfortable journey to the passengers. While in the last decade population of the city has increased manifold. Out of these 190 buses about 30 were declared obsolete few years ago but no replacement were made. As a result, there is an acute shortage of Buses from Karnal depot.
Due to this shortage most of the people living in nearby villages and other areas around Karnal have to use private transport buses. Also, most of the Roadways buses from Karnal depot ply on long routes rather on small routs in surrounding areas. Daily passengers including office goers and students face a lot of problem while traveling to nearby areas by bus. While private buses never follow any time table, Roadways buses are hardly seen on the roads.
Due to all this the daily scene out side Karnal bus stand is somewhat like in this picture….!
More buses should be provided to Karnal depot so that common people of Karnal doesn’t suffer unnecessarily.

Super Mall multiplex: Total paisa vasool

The other day we went to watch the much anticipated Akshay Kumar starrer Chandni Chowk to China at the newly opened multiplex in Super Mall. Thankfully I have been asked to do a review of the multiplex and not the movie, because I would rather sit idle then do a review of a complete crap like CC2C. Why people make such kind of movies is beyond my comprehension. Now before I get carried away, let me come straight to the point.

The multiplex culture has come as a breath of fresh air for people who dislike watching movies on the small screen and always crib over the fact that there aren’t any good cinema halls around. Karnal was one such ‘multiplex starved’ city until the inauguration of Super Mall. The multiplex at the mall can match any of the best in its class if you ignore the minor glitches here and there. As you enter the hall, the friendly and courteous staff members assist you in getting to your seat. The seats are comfortable and can recline forward to offer maximum comfort. The dearth of space between rows of seats can play spoilsport though, as tall people will find it difficult to adjust their legs if the seat is stretched fully forward. But the seats are extremely comfortable and that can easily overshadow the minor discomfort caused by the lack of space.

The screen is wide and clear and the surround sound system does a pretty good job in lending that added edge to the entire experience. During the break, you can also munch on some pretty sumptuous snacks; and all this at extremely affordable prices. Having got used to spending 150 bucks for a movie at the plush multiplexes in the NCR, it was a pleasant surprise to get pretty much the same service for just 80 rupees. All in all a total paisa vasool experience.

Smoking Thrills....!

Yes..! to most of the youngsters 'Smoking Thrills', they start it because they think it looks 'cool', under pressure from friends or just to impress girls...!!

It is one of the biggest ongoing debates, if the govt. really wants to put a ban on smoking then why don't they shut the Cigarette companies.

Here is a great writ-up, from on of our 'Karnalite', Mr. Vaibhav Arora, published in blogs of Zee News. The writer has written a great lampoon targeting all the 'proud smokers'.

The Write-up goes as under:

"Since my early childhood, as far back as I can recall, parents and elders have always asked me to stay away from smoking. It wasn’t hard as nobody in my family smokes and so I did not realize how ‘cool’ smoking can actually make you look- until I joined college where a lot of people I saw around would have a cigarette in hand, even though most of them were doing it under pressure from friends or just to impress girls; not knowing what it would eventually do to their health."

Cleanliness and Godliness

I came across this write-up, the author, Mr.GKS Virk, is from Karnal now living in Switzerland.
In very simple word he has described the apathy of people 'towards general cleanliness of public places' and 'a lack of sense of respect for public spaces'.

Here is a small Para from the write-up:
"The one thing that has stuck me across all my trips home over these last 9 years is the fact that a lot has changed and a lot has remained constant. In my opinion, the key changes have been in the area of general infrastructure development. The number of vehicles on the road has increased exponentially, there are many more avenues for entertainment and leisure (even my little home town now has an FM radio station!?). The average person on the street seems to be happier and confident. The changes have been across almost facets of life.

In spite of all these changes, what has remained constant across all these years are the apathy towards general cleanliness of public places and a lack of sense of respect for public spaces. The personal hygiene of an average middle class Indian is of a fairly high standard. However, when it come to maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of public spaces, apart from religious spaces, every other common area is used as a garbage dump with impunity. As a nation, we seem to have singularly failed in maintaining even a minimum standard of cleanliness in our public spaces."
